Greencroft was sympathetically developed on the site of the town fire station and very successfully preserves and merges the traditional pony and fire tender housing, incorporating it into a new and contemporary dwelling featuring a stunning steel curved roof. The preservation, not only of this historically significant building, but also the protected ancient beech tree nearby was of paramount importance to the local planning authorities and Charleston Homes worked closely with them to agree the end design which so successfully blends old and new and this success was recognised by an award from the North Dorset Design Awards in 2012. From the application for planning permission to completion, this project took approximately 15 months.

The traditionally constructed house is clad in warm coloured Western Red Cedar and the windows in the new section are of high efficiency aluminium, whilst the existing fire station maintains its authenticity with traditional oak frames. The stunning curved roof engages with the beech tree allowing it to gently overhang the house.

The interior continues to promote a natural and airy feel, with oak flooring and a beautiful freestanding staircase with glass balustrade leading from the spacious living area to the upstairs. Here one finds a lovely mezzanine style bedroom, contemporary luxury bathroom and further bedroom. The lower floor area houses a third bedroom, Jack & Jill style bathroom, kitchen and living area. The lower generous dining space features patio opening out onto a hardwood deck and step down into hot tub. Subtle technology continues the blend of old and new throughout this home, with built in television, digitally controlled showers and underfloor heating.
